Mod Comms
Building the premiere network promoting moderate voices and ideas across the media landscape, with a special focus on new media
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
For too long, the far left and far right have dominated online conversations, promoting extreme voices and crowding out the mainstream middle. The Moderate Communications Center (“Mod Comms”) is here to change that. Mod Comms is a versatile communications shop filling an important void by amplifying dynamic and compelling center-left leaders and ideas across the new media landscape. We focus on finding, curating, and building a pipeline of digital content featuring a new generation of talented moderates on major new media platforms to challenge the dominance of the extremes. Our aim is simple and ambitious—to become the loudest, smartest, and most effective communications machine promoting moderates in America.
What sets Mod Comms apart?
We are building Mod Comms to be a first-mover in the political media space—proactively championing moderate leaders and ideas through a dynamic mix of timely clips, creative content, and strategic press engagement to ensure the centrist movement cuts through the noise. From YouTube shorts to Instagram reels and the latest podcasts, our mission is to be the dominant network amplifying center-left voices across the platforms that shape public discourse. Along with our promotional work, our team continuously monitors digital, traditional and emerging outlets to capture breakthrough moments, highlight trends, surface talent, and identify strategic opportunities to drive our national conversation toward the center.

MOD COMMS IN ACTION
Sarah McCammon joins Third Way as Senior Fellow for Moderate Power Project
Journalist Sarah McCammon is joining Third Way as a Senior Fellow, adding a fresh voice to the Moderate Power Project (MPP), the largest new center-left effort to bolster moderates begun since the 2024 election. McCammon served most recently at NPR as a national political correspondent and host of the NPR Politics Podcast.
“As we build the first-ever megaphone for moderates, we are excited to welcome Sarah McCammon to the team. She brings a dynamic, trusted voice with deep expertise on the terrain and the issues and values that resonate with the American middle, which are essential to forging a mainstream majority. Her talent and perspective will be a huge asset to the Moderate Power Project as we challenge the extremes and strengthen the political center,” Third Way president Jon Cowan said.
How Dems break through in 2026
Insights from MPP's Data Hub research got top billing in Politico's Playbook, one of the most widely read political tipsheets in Washington. Our work is routinely shared with influential reporters, commentators, analysts, and public officials, shaping the elite discourse around the political and policy ideas that can win a majority of support.
Helping Get the Messaging Right through our Signal Project
To fight back effectively against Trump and Republicans’ chaotic and damaging policies, center-left leaders must separate the signal (things that matter to undecideds) from the noise (things that matter to policy wonks but lack political salience with everyone else). To that end, we created the Signal Project, an 18-month campaign that identifies which Trump Administration actions are most resonant with key constituencies. Our public opinion research has found that the best way to reach people in the center is by focusing on the GOP actions that will drive up costs and jeopardize the safety and security of Americans, their families, and their communities. We’re pushing pragmatic leaders to go on offense and arming them with compelling stories and data that expose the MAGA right on the issues that matter most to Americans in the middle.
Elevating a New Generation of Moderate Leaders
During the 2024 presidential election, Mod Comms orchestrated media tours to help book talented center-left mayors on local television and radio shows in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. The media tours featured Mayor Paige Cognetti of Scranton, PA and Mayor Cavalier Johnson of Milwaukee, WI and generated over a hundred thousand viewer and listener impressions. Mayor Cognetti, a NewDEAL Leader, appeared on the Rick Smith Show as part of our push to reach working-class voters who have tuned out of national media outlets.
